One of my goals for 2022 is to share more about liturgical living. Liturgical living is something that as I’ve grown within my Catholic faith, I’ve come to really love. There are so many feast days, lessons to be shared while celebrating the lives of Saints and other special days. One of these special days is coming up in 2022 on March 1, 2022. Fat Tuesday, or shrove Tuesday, the day before we enter into the Lenten season. (Ash Wednesday) — this is a time of sacrifice and reflection, and I think it’s really fun to make Fat Tuesday a fun day for the whole family before entering into that more somber season as we await the resurrection.
Here are some simple ways to make this day extra fun!
Make a simple King Cake, or if you’re lucky like me this year, my friend is actually in New Orleans for work and mailed me one. The kids always enjoying finding the baby, although none of us are really cake people. In the past, I have just done cinnamon rolls and sprinkled green and purple sprinkles on top so this should be very fancy comparatively.

Some time ago, as I was researching liturgical living, I read about a tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Ideally, using up certain items from the kitchen. This tradition came with the suggestion to have “pancake races” meaning– you flip a pancake in a pan and race each other. We’ve done this every year for the last four years and the kids LOVE it. They think it is absolutely hilarious.
Make a special dinner and bring out the good plates. I will likely do a seafood boil as that’s a hearty meal and always fun to cook in a huge pot in the backyard.
Have a few lavish treats, in our case– that’s king cake and typically cookies.

Take some time to discuss the upcoming Lent season, what you will fast from, and why.
Have a fancy meal, a dance party, and enjoy each other’s company!
