Our stay at Key Lime Cove in Gurnie, IL!

Disclaimer:  In exchange for this review, I received a complimentary night stay and a media rate for one evening.  All opinions expressed are my own!

The last time we visited the Great Lakes Naval Base, we passed by the Key Lime Cove indoor park and I declared we would spend the night there at least once before we moved so far away.  We were able to stay in a deluxe queen stateroom, which sleeps six between two queen beds and a sofa sleeper.

Right when you walk in, you get the sense you’ve been transported from the cold Chicago climate to something significantly more tropical and warm.  There is so much to do on site, you don’t really feel a need to go off site.  We ate on site at the D.W. Anderson’s restaurant for dinner and breakfast.  It was delicious, reasonably priced, and offered healthy options.  More than anything, the service FROM EVERY MEMBER OF THE STAFF was outstanding.  They went above and beyond to make our dining experience great, it really showed.  The breakfast buffet was Liam’s favorite, because he loved being able to get a donut and sausage in one place.

I went to the freshly made omelet station. JOJO is such a nice chef, his personality and omelets are top notch.

At the resort, aside from the Water Park, they offer activities for kids like coloring, cookie decorating, or playing games on the Wii.  All free of charge with your overnight stay! There has never been a more kid friendly place to stay in the Midwest.  There is an arcade, an ice cream shop, a coloring station all within ten feet of each other!

Of course the most popular part of the resort was the indoor water park!  They have something for everyone, to be honest.  It was clean and warm and so impressive.  They have lifeguards everywhere, and the water is not really deep at any point.  I could not get over how bold Liam was being on these huge water slides.  I thought they were fast!  We had so much fun racing each other to the top and sliding down.  My husband and I were laughing so hard at just HOW fast these slides felt, and how small Liam looked laughing hysterically as he flew down them.  We went down the lazy river as a family about ten times, and the toddler area was perfect for Sawyer.  It even had three “Sawyer size” slides for him to enjoy.  There’s a bar on site with beer and snack items, and an adult only hot tub area.  That was so nice, even in the middle of this huge indoor water park, they were able to create this oasis for adults.  I wasn’t able to get as many photos as I would have liked, because a lifeguard told me photography wasn’t allowed.  So, that was kind of awkward.   We didn’t leave the resort at all on Saturday.  We had breakfast on site, played on site, napped on site, ate dinner on site, and watched a movie in our room before bedtime.  It was so nice.

We all agreed it was a really amazing getaway location, located just north of Chicago in Gurnie, IL.  Gurnie also has a great mall and a Six Flags amusement park!  It was relaxing and being such a kid friendly location, I didn’t feel as stressed to keep kids quiet or clean or satisfied as I normally do at hotels.  The accommodations were beyond my expectations and I commented once or twice on how the Key Lime Cove website does not do this place justice.  It is huge and fun lays around every corner.  The value is outstanding, and I noted several birthday parties happening.  Doors with balloons and giant Happy Birthday banners made me think of what an incredible place to share a winter birthday with your kids and a friend or two!

Things to note- there is no gym at the resort.  There is a gym right across the parking lot, you can work out for free with a pass from the front desk of the resort!  Pretty simple. Don’t forget your flip flops. We were so distracted with packing for our kids, that both parents forget theirs. Check their package deals! I noticed several available online making it so much cheaper to stay for multiple nights. You can buy your LEGOLAND discovery center tickets right there on site.
